Fact check: drink driving! – myPolice

FACT: Six schooners equals 9.6 standard drinks so it will not be safe for you to drive until at approximately 10:00am the next morning. A health adult liver may break down one standard drink per hour or longer.

Having 6 schooners of heavy beer and your last drink being at midnight, you will not be fine to go to work at 6am.

FACT: Even though you may not feel intoxicated you may still be over the legal limit.

Even though you may not feel drunk, you may not be right to drive.

FACT: Food and water will not assist the body to metabolise the alcohol faster. The alcohol has already been absorbed into the system. Time is the only measure that will reduce alcohol concentration in your body.

Eating or drinking water before bed will not sober you up and prevent a hangover!

FACT: Regular drinkers may not appear to be intoxicated however any level of alcohol in your body with reduce any sort of reaction time to an unexpected situation.

FACT: The same rules apply to operating vessels on the water.

Even as the skipper of a boat/vessel, you are required to abide by the same drink driving rules.

FACT: Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) may continue to rise once you have finished drinking alcohol. BAC can rise for up to 90 minutes after you last drink.

When you stop drinking, so does the increase of your blood alcohol content.

You may be stopped when driving at any time by a police officer to provide a specimen of breath for a breath test. It is better to be safe than sorry, plan ahead and organise a lift.

Road safety is everyone’s responsibility but it starts with you making good decisions before you get behind the wheel.
